Academic advising at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ÊÓƵ seeks to empower each student to craft and pursue a transformative liberal arts experience that prepares them for impactful and personally fulfilling lives. Faculty advisors support students in planning and achieving their educational goals, facilitate connections to campus resources and communities, and guide students to make informed decisions as they pursue their academic interests and aspirations. 

Course Planning for New and Exploring Students

The Bachelor of Arts - Music major is a highly flexible major for students wishing to study music at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ÊÓƵ. Because of this flexibility, it is crucial for you to take an active role in the building of your experience. You will not simply find the list of required courses and use it as a checklist. You will make a decision about what you want your major to be and do, and you will create a pathway through the major with the help of advisors.

If you're interested in the Bachelor of Arts - Music major, you will need to talk with people, ask questions, and do some research in the music course offerings.  a great place to start is reviewing the extensive offering of music (MUSI, MUIN, MUCA, MUDA, MUEP, MUEN, MUJI, MUCO, MURP, MUTH) courses at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ÊÓƵ. There are so many courses you can take and so many ways in which you can combine them!

Your major advisor will play a crucial role in this process and you will be working with your advisor very closely.  In fact, you should expect to meet with your advisor often and regularly. Students should declare and develop a plan for the major by the end of their sophomore year.

AP Credit and Advanced Placement

Students who have earned AP credit for the Music Theory AP exam will receive 6 units of MUTH credit, which can count toward the Bachelor of Arts - Music major. Bachelor of Arts - Music students who wish to complete any portion of the music theory sequence at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ÊÓƵ must still complete the music theory placement exam.

Declare a Major/Minor

All students are expected to declare a major before the end of sophomore year. Ideally, sophomore students will declare a major (and switch to an advisor in the major) before advance registration advising begins in spring term.

Major Advising

All students will transition to a major advisor upon declaration. The major advisor will help students plan their coursework to satisfy requirements for the major, select courses in other areas to complement the major or satisfy personal interests, and prepare for their Senior Experience.
