I teach the core musicology sequence MUCO 211-212 (Introduction to Musicologies) and two 100-level musicology courses: Big Works, Big Questions and History of Popular Music in the United States. I also teach upper-level musicology seminars on a variety of topics:

  • Concepts of Authenticity and Artifice in Popular Music
  • Cultural Histories of Sound Recording
  • Music in the 1920s
  • Music in the United States
  • Myths and Fictions of Classical Music
  • Sounds and Spaces of the 19th-Century European Public Concert

At Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ÊÓƵ, I have given many public talks and participated in panel discussions about music and other topics, including a series of lectures in conjunction with the documentary film series America’s Popular Music, onstage comments and pre-concert interviews for concerts on the New Music at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ÊÓƵ series, guest lectures in courses in the History, Spanish, and German departments, and multiple presentations at First-Year Studies faculty symposia on the musical works The Rite of Spring, Kind of Blue, and the history of blues songs written about the 1927 Mississippi River flood. In 2020 I participated in several episodes of the piano-percussion quartet Yarn/Wire’s Feedback series, interviewing composers who had collaborated with the ensemble. I was awarded the First-Year Studies teaching prize in 2022. I have presented academic papers at several national and international music conferences, including annual meetings of the American Musicological Society and the Society for American Music, and I am currently working on an article about teaching authenticity concepts and topics in undergraduate musicology courses.
