My teaching interests include creative writing (fiction and nonfiction), 19th, 20th, and 21st century American literature, American autobiography and memoir, literature of the American West, and graphic novels and memoirs. I'm also interested in literature and medicine, travel narratives, and spirituality in literature.
I'm the author of three books, including The End of the Straight and Narrow (2008), A Door in the Ocean (2012), and One Day You'll Thank Me (2018). My work has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, The American Scholar, Yale Review, Harvard Review, Creative Nonfiction, Best American Sports Writing and many other periodicals. I'm a regular contributor to Men's Health and Swimmer magazines.
Lastly, I'm a lifelong, die-hard swimmer and I hate to lose.
