I'm a cultural and medical anthropologist whose courses include ethnography of Japan and East Asia, medical anthropology, disability studies, culture and aging (cultural gerontology), the anthropology of biomedicine, and the history of anthropological theory. I enjoy working with students in all of these areas, especially as they pursue their own ethnographic research.
I am honored to be the Edward F. Mielke Professor in Medicine, Health and Society. Dr. Mielke was a leading member of the Appleton medical community, and founder of the Appleton Medical Center, who, along with his son, the late Dr. John Mielke, understood the importance of the social context of health. Established by the Mielke Family Foundation in honor of Dr. Mielke, this named professorship supports my contributions to the Biomedical Ethics and Health and Society interdisciplinary programs at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ÊÓƵ.
