2 Minutes With 鈥 is a series of short features to introduce us to the passions and interests of 杨贵妃传媒视频 students on and off campus.

Many people dream of one day running a business. This dream doesn鈥檛 typically include co-managing a night spot on your college campus during your junior year.聽For Liam聽Wulfman,聽however, this is reality.聽聽

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 imagine doing another job. Everything just seems kind of boring in comparison,鈥 Liam says of his work at the Viking Room (VR), 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 on-campus gathering place that first opened in 1969.聽

The VR聽is located in the basement of Memorial Hall, a casual hangout for faculty, staff and students who are 21 or older, mostly staffed by students.

The Viking Room was managed by an outside company until recently.聽Now it is student run (plus a faculty advisor). Liam and three other students manage the place that has been part of the fabric of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community for five decades.聽聽

鈥淲e run everything, basically,鈥 Liam says. 鈥淥perationally, we are聽pretty self-sufficient. Other than one faculty (advisor), it鈥檚 all student run. It鈥檚聽pretty crazy. It鈥檚 weird and it鈥檚 exciting.鈥澛

Liam聽is in charge of聽a full staff, creates work schedules with other managers, and ensures the Viking Room is running smoothly and responsibly at all times.聽聽

鈥淢y first shift, I was carding,鈥 he says, 鈥淚t was pretty fun. They just told me, sit here, make sure no one under 21 comes in. Like, oh god,聽I was so afraid.鈥澛

Building skills

Liam, a biology major who is part of 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 swimming and diving team, joined the VR staff near the end of his freshman year.聽

鈥淥ne of the people on the swim team worked at the bar. 鈥 She told me to apply.鈥澛

As one might assume, now being responsible for the well-being of a fully functioning entertainment hangout while still in school is quite the challenge. Yet, as Liam gets more acclimated in his position, he is becoming more comfortable with his role as a manager and his need to juggle those duties with the demands of the classroom.聽聽

鈥淚t鈥檚 been tough, but really rewarding,鈥 he says. 鈥淣ow I know the bar聽really well. I pride myself on knowing how to make the stereo work every time. If you flick it just the right way,聽it聽works.鈥澛犅

He is even working to add features to improve the Viking Room experience.聽聽

鈥淭urning the VR into a place where people can have fun and enjoy new things,鈥 Liam says. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited for the future of the VR.鈥澛犅

Familiar faces

He says it鈥檚 fun to run a business on campus and have the opportunity to serve and work with familiar faces, including professors who sometimes come in as guest bartenders.聽

鈥淲orking with professors is always super funny,鈥 Liam says. 鈥淓specially if you have had the professor before.鈥 They鈥檙e聽the experts in class but often not so skilled behind the bar.聽

Having the opportunity to build management skills necessary to run a business while in college can be golden in the long run, a big selling point for someone who one day hopes to open his own brewery.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a big craze for microbrewers right now, so I鈥檓 waiting for it to die down and I鈥檒l be the cool one to bring it back,鈥 Liam says.
